CAPM® Certification in Switzerland: Requirements, Exam and Preparation

You contribute to projects, want to take on more responsibility or are considering a move into project management. How can you demonstrate that you understand the fundamentals?

The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI) provides a recognised foundation in project management. No previous project management experience is required.

For professionals building a new career direction, CAPM can give existing technical or specialist expertise a clearer project management dimension.

Who is CAPM certification for?

CAPM can be relevant to:

  • Professionals moving into project coordination or project support.

  • Engineers and specialists who contribute to project teams.

  • Graduates seeking a structured introduction to project management.

  • Professionals changing careers or preparing for greater responsibility.

It is also worth considering if PMP is a longer-term objective but you do not yet have the required project leadership experience.

The practical question is whether project management knowledge would help you contribute more effectively—or make your profile more convincing for your target roles.

What are the CAPM eligibility requirements?

PMI currently lists three requirements:

Requirement

What you need

Age

At least 18

Education

A secondary qualification, such as a high school diploma, or its global equivalent

Project management education

At least 23 hours completed before the examination

You do not need a university degree or previous experience leading projects. For Swiss vocational or other qualifications, confirm how your diploma fits PMI’s education requirement before applying.

What does CAPM cover?

CAPM extends beyond planning schedules and tracking tasks. The examination covers four domains:

Domain

Weight

Project Management Fundamentals and Core Concepts

36%

Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies

17%

Agile Frameworks and Methodologies

20%

Business Analysis Frameworks

27%

This combination introduces different ways of organising project work, alongside understanding needs and requirements.

Preparation should follow the CAPM Examination Content Outline. Studying only the PMBOK® Guide does not cover the full examination scope.

What is the CAPM exam format?

The examination contains 150 questions, with 180 minutes allocated. It is available in several languages, including English, French and German.

Understanding terminology is a starting point. Effective preparation also means being able to distinguish between approaches, interpret a situation and explain why one answer fits better than another.

How should you prepare?

Use a structured sequence:

  1. Check your eligibility and confirm the required education.

  2. Complete your training, covering all four examination domains.

  3. Apply the concepts to examples from work, study or realistic project situations.

  4. Practise examination questions, reviewing the reasoning behind your mistakes.

  5. Assess readiness before committing to an examination date.

The required 23 hours of education are an eligibility threshold. Plan additional time for revision and practice according to your starting knowledge.

CAPM or PMP: which should you choose?

Choose according to your experience and professional objective.

CAPM is a suitable starting point when you need a structured foundation or do not yet meet PMP’s experience requirements.

PMP is intended for professionals who already have the required experience leading and managing projects.

CAPM is not a compulsory step before PMP. However, an active CAPM certification fulfils PMP’s 35-hour training requirement. You must still meet PMP’s education and experience criteria.

What should you budget?

Include training, examination fees, preparation resources and study time. Check what your course package includes before comparing prices.

Use PMI’s current examination price when planning your budget, and distinguish course completion from earning the certification: certification requires passing PMI’s examination.

How do you maintain CAPM certification?

CAPM holders must earn 15 Professional Development Units (PDUs) every three years and complete PMI’s renewal process. This encourages continued learning as your project responsibilities develop.
